Cause of Bantam Lake fish kill is undetermined
Hundreds of deal fish were spotted along the shoreline of Bantam Lake last week after a widespread fish kill.
The cause of the kill could not be determined even after an investigation by White Memorial Conservation Center research director and wildlife biologist Jamie Fischer and the state Departmen of Energy and Environmental Protection. There was no chemical spill at the lake and dissolved oxygen levels in the lake are high enough to support fish life, according to the investigation.
More than 10 species of fish were among the casualties. The investigation also ruled out post-spawning stress as the reason for the kill because none of the identified species are spawning this time of year.
The kill comes at a time when the Bantam Lake Protective Association is focusing its efforts on controlling invasive weeds and algae.
