The Bakehouse is open for business in the former jail in the center of Litchfield.

Owners Jeremy McKendry and Allison Varian, both of Torrington, held a soft opening Thursday and are planning a grand opening later in the month.

The Bakehouse features homemade bread, cookies, brownies, muffins, cakes and cupcakes. Croissants and donuts will be available weekends. All products are made from scratch at the bakery. Coffee and tea are available too.

The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

An interesting feature in the bakery is its storage room. The space was once the jail’s solitary confinement cell and still has a door with bars on it. Customers are welcome to check out the space.

The owner spent months preparing the shop for business. The sparkling clean interior will be outfitted with seating and some outdoor seating will be available, McKendry said.
