Crews from Martin Laviero Contractors of Bristol mistakenly excavated the wrong traffic island in the center of Litchfield this week and have spent Thursday and Friday restoring it.
The island in question is the one of the west side of the intersection of West Street, South Street and East Street. The island's granite curbing and brick surface were removed on Tuesday and had to be put back into place.
Martin Laviero was hired by the town's Beautification Commission to upgrade the two islands on the road between the Center Green and the East Green. One of the islands was excavated this week.
The plan is to remove the bricks of each island and raise their granite curbing to create large planters resembling a fourth island at the intersection. That island was upgraded last year by the Litchfield Garden Club.
The project's $13,850 cost is being funded by donations made in memory of Jeanne FitzGerald, who was a longtime member of the Beautification Commission.
