A proposed Litchfield town budget of $32,014,732 for 2019-20 was approved convincingly during a town meeting Thursday.

Only two of the 175 voters at the Litchfield Intermediate School auditorium voted against the spending plan.

The approved budget is $737,524, or 2.4 percent, higher than the current budget of $31,277,208. Under the new budget, the Board of Education gets $19,471,500 and Board of Selectmen $8,297,284. Debt and capital improvements total $4,245,948.

The vote capped a rather routine budget process that saw the school board settle for an increase of $477,970, or 2.5 percent, over its current budget of $18,993,530. The selectmen’s budget shows an increase of $145,026, or 1.8 percent, over their current budget of $8,152,258. The increase in debt and capital is $114,528, or 2.7 percent.

As for the effect on taxpayers, the new budget will result in the current tax rate of 27.7 mills rising to 28.2 mills. The increase will mean an assessment of $200,000 seeing a jump in taxes of $100.

The Board of Finance is scheduled to set the new tax rate on Monday.
