Fourteen students from Litchfield High and Wamogo are preparing for a summer trip to Mexico on which they'll gather scientific data.
The trip in the first two weeks of August will be led by LHS science teachers John Markelon and Dean Birdsall, a pair of well-seasoned scientists who have been around the world on similar expeditions.
Students are headed to the Yucatan Peninsula as part of Operation Wallacea and will study wildlife diversity and scuba dive on a barrier reef.
Wamogo's students are Meg Salmon, Julia Boger-Hawkins, Lily Borbas, Paul Marceski, Rose Kelly, Kalea Barger, Sam Gabriel-Deveau, Marcos Lopez and Alex Johnson. Representing Litchfield are Jimmy Kelleher, Augie Hurtado, Carson Mello, Sarah Beres and Dante Ferrari.
The students hosted a Cinco de Mayo dinner at the Litchfield Community Center on Friday to raise money for the trip. It will cost about $2,500 per student and fundraisers are beng held to defray the cost. A local sponsor is Sportsmen's in Bantam, which will be providing equiment for the trip.
