Warren General Store a much-welcome addition (01-06-19)

The center of Warren is buzzing with activity with the opening last week of the new Warren General Store, a place offering get up and go in the morning, lunch and an opportunity for locals to chat and get caught up on the latest news in town.

Owner John Favreau welcomed the public with a soft opening on Thursday and is adding to the store's shelves and refrigerators as the store steams toward a more large-scale official opening later in the month. The reception from the public, Favreau said Friday, has been positive and welcoming.

"People are super-excited," Favreau said during a break from his duties behind the deli counter. "They're appreciative that we have a general store in Warren again. The support has been overwhelming."

First Selectman Craig Nelson has been a regular customer since the store opened in Warren Town Center, the block of commercial buildings Favreau purchased last year and has fixed up for commercial, retail and office use.

"Everything is great, especially the coffee first thing in the morning," Nelson said.

The store is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Available in the morning are breakfast sandwches, bagels from New York City, and pastries made by Favreau, who is actively involved in running the store. 

Eleven specialty sandwiches, many of which are named after roads in town, are available at lunchtime as are build to order sandwiches, deli salads and sides, and quiche, tarts and flatbread. Daily specials include salads, soup, chili, rice and beans, macaroni and cheese, vegetarian lasagna and grilled vegetables.

"Our prices are affordable and everything is about taste," Favreau said. "Good food in a good atmosphere, that's what the Warren General Store is about."

The store also offers grocery items such as milk and vegetables, Dutchess Coffee and bread from the Bantam Bread Company, local maple syrup and daily newspapers.
