It was not Wamogo's night in the Class S softball tournament semifinals at West Haven High School on Monday.

The Warriors, making their third straight semifinal appearance, were no match for Somers in a 14-0 loss. Somers pounded out 23 hits and took advantage of six Wamogo errors.

"Somers hit the ball hard and played defense," Wamogo coach Dave Sylvester said. "They proved that they are a state championship contender."

Somers scored once in the first inning and four times in both the second and third innings to take a 9-0 lead. The hits off the Somers' bats were a variety of bloopers, seeing-eye grounders and shots to the fence.

Mackenzie Harnett, one of four seniors, had two singles in her final game. Samantha Sylvester and Paige Mitchell each had a single. Other seniors were Savannah Wheeler, McKenzie Hoyt and Cassidy Wilson.

Despite the loss, Sylvester was satisfied that hs team had gone as far as possible.

"I'm proud of the ladies for the work they put in and their perseverance," the coach said. "It's not easy when you lose an All-State pitcher late in the season. And yet, we cranked out another five wins."

The All-State pitcher was Sylvester's daughter, Samantha, who injured her shoulder and was unable to pitch.
