Thursday's Class S tournament second-round game between Wamogo and Creed High School of New Haven was an edge-of-the seat, triple-overtime thriller that wasn't decided until Garrett Sattazahn's driving, off-balance shot rolled off the rim with one second left. With the miss, Creed secured a 72-70 victory that ended Wamogo's season at 21-4. Below is a sequence of Sattazahn's game-tying attempt. John McKenna photos

It's been long time since the Wamogo gym saw anything like Thursday's Class S tournament second-round thriller between Wamogo and Creed High School of New Haven.

A resilient Creed overcame a four-point deficit with 1:35 left in the the third overtime and weathered a last-second, game-tying attempt by Garrett Sattazahn to escape with a 72-70 win. Creed had the last shot at the end of regulation, the end of the first overtime and the end of the second overtime, but failed to convert on the game-winning chances, much to the relief of the spirited crowd supporting the Warriors.

With the score tied at 64, Wamogo's Sean Coffey sank a pair of free throws and Max Loomis followed with a driving layup to put the Warriors ahead 68-64 with 1:35 left. Creed answered with four straight points to tie the game before Sattazahn hit two free throws to make it 70-68 with 35 seconds left.

But Creed wasn't done, as Dwayne Davila drilled a three-point field goal to put his team ahead for good with 23 seconds left and sank one free throw with 6.6 seconds to play. Sattazahn's driving, off-balance attempt teetered on the rim before rolling off. And with that, a hugely successful season for the Warriors was over.

Sattazahn, who has made a genuine case for selection to the Class S All-State team with his play this year, scored 27 points. Max Loomis, playing his final game, had 13 points and Reid Turtoro 11. Wamogo is shaping up to be a strong team again next year with Sattazahn, Turtoro, Coffey and fellow sophomore Eric Zappone returning. Ethan Collins, a freshman who was the first off the bench, will be back as well.
