Clutch defense, just enough offense and the pitching of Cecily Zemaitis has put Wamogo into the Class S softball tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season.

The Warriors edged Stafford, 4-3, in the quarterfinals on Friday to avenge a semifinal loss last year and will play Somers in the semifinals on Monday 7 p.m. at West Haven High School.

Zemaitis gave up three runs in the third inning but settled down and held Stafford scoreless the rest of the way. She was backed by a strong defensive effort that was highlighted by a running catch by right fielder Cassidy Wilson with a runner on base in the top of the seventh.

Wilson's grab came after Wamogo scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. Savannah Wheeler walked, Mackenzie Harnett singled and Zemaitis moved both up a base with a sacrifce bunt. Paige Mitchell followed with a two-run single to right field.

Linnea Budge, center, and teammates Savannah Wheeler, left, and McKenzie Hoyt run off the field after Budge caught a long drive at the fence in left field to end Wamogo's win over Shepaug on Thursday.
