Twenty-three Goshen children tried their luck in the 25th annual Poppy’s Fishing Derby sponsored by the Recreation Department on Saturday.
The derby, held at the town-owned property on East Street South, is named for the late Richard (Poppy) Kobylenski, Goshen's first selectman from 1969-91.
Kobylenski founded the derby to give children and their parents an opportunity to experience the beauty of the town-owned land.
Particpants fished for trout stocked by Dan Kobylenski and his brothers, Mark and Vinny. Donations covered the cost of the trout and the fishing poles, tackle boxes and gift certificates handed out as prizes. Recreation Director Colleen Finn presented trophies to the top anglers. Calvin Nodine of Goshen cooked up a free breakfast in his mobile food truck.
Henry Contadini won the derby by catching 5.8 pounds of trout. Elizabeth Watkins was second with 5.5 pounds caught and Mary Watkins was third with 4.8 pounds.
